Frequently Asked Questions About Counselling
What is counselling like?
Counselling is a safe and confidential space where you can talk openly about whatever is on your mind. Counselling isn’t about being given advice or having someone “fix” you. Instead, it’s a supportive process where you are listened to without judgement and encouraged to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences at your own pace.
As your counsellor, my role is to walk alongside you, to help you make sense of what you’re going through, and to gently offer perspectives that might support your understanding. The focus is always on your needs and what feels right for you. Counselling can feel challenging at times, but it is also a space where growth, clarity, and healing can take place.

How Many Sessions?
The number of sessions varies from person to person. Some people come for just a few sessions to work through a specific issue, while others choose longer-term therapy to explore things in more depth. There’s no right or wrong – it depends on what feels most helpful for you.
We’ll regularly check in together to see how you’re finding the sessions and whether continuing, pausing, or bringing therapy to a close feels right. The pace and length of your counselling journey will always be guided by your needs.
How Do I Know If Counselling Is For Me?
Counselling can be helpful if you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply want a safe space to talk through your thoughts and feelings. Some people come to counselling during a difficult time in their lives, while others use it as a way to better understand themselves and make positive changes.
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit. If you’re curious about your emotions, struggling with something specific, or just want to explore things in a supportive, non-judgemental environment, counselling could be right for you. Often, the best way to find out is to give it a try and see how it feels for you.

Is Everything We Talk About Confidential?
Yes, what you share in counselling is treated with the utmost respect and kept confidential. This means our sessions are a private space where you can talk openly and honestly.
The only exceptions to confidentiality are if I believe there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if I am legally required to share information. These situations are rare, and I would always aim to discuss this with you first whenever possible.
We will go through the details of confidentiality together when we agree our counselling contract, so you’ll know exactly what to expect before we begin.
What Can I Talk About?
You can bring whatever feels important to you. Some people come to counselling to talk about grief, anxiety, depression, or low self-worth. Others want support with life changes, relationship issues, loss of identity, or challenges around men’s mental health.
There are no “right” or “wrong” topics – if it matters to you, it’s welcome in the counselling room. Together, we can explore what you’re going through at your pace and find a way forward that feels right for you.
